History, activity and focus

150 Years of Mechanical Engineering in the Czech Lands

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague experienced with mechanical engineering all phases of its development starting from the onset of the industrial revolution up to the present time and often paid here an active role. The 17 Faculty departments cover the entire sphere of mechanical engineering from mathematics and physics over materials and technologies up to individual types of machines and processes and enterprise economics. Their 150 years lasting history is an extensive one and represents not only a great commitment but also a hopeful promise of further development of the faculty for industry in the Czech Lands based on Czech mechanical engineers.

Focus of the department

The Department of Energy Engineering trains experts for jobs in a wide range of energy engineering fields. Education is focused on issues of production of electricity and heat from fossile, nuclear and renewable sources and energy consumption in industry and in the housing and municipal sphere. Special attention is paid to heat pumps, cooling technology and gas compression. Exceptional emphasis is laid on the economy part of gaining and transformation of energy and its effective use. The department also deals with ecological aspects of the operation of energy engineering equipment aimed at reduction of negative impacts of energy engineering on the environment.

Significant cooperation

The department of Energy Engineering cooperates with many industrial partners and research institutions. This cooperation is focused mainly on research projects with the following companies: Doosan Škoda Power s.r.o., ÚJV Řež a.s., Honeywell spol. s r.o., Škoda JS a.s., OT Energy Services a.s., AF-Consult, we also cooperate on project with research companies, mainly the Department of Thermodynamics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Department of Chemical Processes of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Department of Physics the Czech Academy of Sciences, Research Center Řež s.r.o. or UJP PRAHA a.s.

Besides research projects the Department of Energy Engineering is engaged in developing and improving study programmes in which it is involved. Of concern is e.g. the project: “Central European Energy Institute“ (CENERGY) of the Operational Programme Education for Competitiveness (OPEC) within the scope of which modules are created of joint education of the CTU in Prague, TU Brno and VŠB-TU Ostrava. The lecture rooms of partners are equipped with state of the art educational technologies and curricula are innovated. This project is a continuation of successfully implemented projects of OPEC: “Partnership in Nuclear Energy Engineering of a New Generation“ and projects OPPA: “Fermi 2010“ and “Effectively and Illustratively – Innovation of Curricula of Sustainable Energy Transformation“

We also keep active cooperation with foreign universities, such as Tokyo Institute of Technology, Universität Stuttgart, Technische Universität Darmstadt, Texas A&M University, University of Massachusetts Lowell, Royal Millitary College Kingston, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University or Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
